Ms Provest, 21, has been invited to a gala dinner in April as one of four finalists for the Aboriginal Education Award at the NSW/ACT Young Achiever Awards.
And her reaction to the news?
“Shocked,” she said.
Ms Provest, who works with Centacare Bathurst with parents and children in Bathurst, Orange and Lithgow, is passionate about breaking down the negative generational cycles in Aboriginal communities.
She co-ordinates a homework club at Bathurst South Public School for Indigenous students where they receive afternoon tea and are given help with their homework from volunteers.
The homework club also offers activities for the students ranging from help and advice on performing CPR to visits from fire trucks to a chance to have a milkshake with police officers.
In August last year, Ms Provest partnered with the Bathurst Local Aboriginal Lands Council and NSW Government Health to launch an antenatal supported playgroup for Aboriginal families to offer health checks and social interaction.
She is also the treasurer at Towra Multifunctional Centre, an Aboriginal children’s long day care centre.
Ms Provest, who has a Diploma in Community Services, hopes in the future to do a double degree in social work and business and open an Aboriginal community centre and childcare centre.
“Making sure families are safe and children thrive - that's probably my main driver,” she said.
She says life for Aboriginal families in Bathurst is improving, but there is always more to do.
“It's getting better,” she said.
“It’s about giving the Aboriginal kids in Bathurst the same opportunities that they have in Sydney.”
Ms Provest was nominated for the award by her manager at Centacare.
The NSW/ACT Young Achiever Awards gala dinner will be held at the SMC Conference and Function Centre in Sydney on Friday, April 20.
Other achievers will be recognised on the night in categories including fashion, community service, sport and small business.
