The upgrade of the intersection will also see the pedestrian crossings that sit right on the entrances and exits of the roundabout removed after years of agitation from the local community.
Bathurst Regional Council director of engineering services Darren Sturgiss said the traffic committee had considered a number of options for the intersection, including traffic lights, but determined that retaining a roundabout would have the “longest life expectancy in terms of traffic capacity”.
Mr Sturgiss said the full design and documentation for the upgrade were almost completed.
“It is anticipated pedestrian access will be allowed at the intersection via pedestrian refuges with traffic having right of way,” Mr Sturgiss said.
“The plans include removal of pedestrian crossings at the George and Howick Street intersection and the installation of pedestrian refuges, similar to the one in front of the post office.
“Pedestrian refuges will be installed in George Street, between Howick and Church streets, and also in Howick Street, between George and Rankin streets.”
Mr Sturgiss said council’s current budget would not meet overall project costs and further funding would be sought from the 2018-19 management plan.
Construction will start once funding is approved by council.
“The landscaping at the intersection will be completely replaced with vegetation that will increase sight vision for motorists and pedestrians,” Mr Sturgiss said.
