Attending theatre is incredibly important to young minds as it ignites imaginations and encourages creativity and curiosity.
The performances presented at BMEC are of such a high standard that adults are often drawn to the shows as much as the young people.
This year BMEC will present four shows for young people in the annual season, three of which are based on books young people and families will have enjoyed.
The first of these is an all-new Australian adaptation of the classic kids’ tale Alice In Wonderland by playwright Mary Anne Butler and starring Dubs Yunupingu as Alice – the first time the role has been played by an Indigenous woman.
We are thrilled to present it at BMEC on Tuesday (for an evening performance) and Wednesday, March 6 and 7.
On April 11 we have Roald Dahl’s George’s Marvellous Medicine, which is packed to the rafters with mischief, music, magic and mammoth laughs. There will be daytime and evening performances.
April is an exciting month for young people in Bathurst with the return of the Catapult Festival. The festival, from April 19-22, will coincide with Youth Week.
Catapult Festival brings youth circus troupes from across the country to Bathurst. Watch out for young people spinning, juggling and unicycling on Bathurst streets in April!
Shows to watch out for during Catapult Festival include A Simple Space by Gravity and Other Myths. This production is suitable for ages seven and over.
Also during Catapult Festival, youth troupes will perform at a gala in the BMEC Theatre and a fire show.
On May 31 we have Patch Theatre returning to BMEC with Yo Diddle Diddle, based on the story book The Cow Tripped Over the Moon by Tony Wilson. The development of this show was workshopped by primary school students from in and around Bathurst in 2016. The show uses hip-hop rhyming language and a live DJ.
