IT’S not every day you get to say you beat over 100,000 competitors from across the globe in an event but Bathurst’s Ash Corby has earned the right to say just that.

Corby has been taking part in the CrossFit Open, and achieving consistently strong results, but reached a new high by finishing the recent Workout 18.2 in first place on the world standings.
The workout combined a series of 35 pound dumbbell squats and bar-facing burpees.
Adding to the intensity was the fact it was carried out as an ascending ladder, which pushed more and more repetitions on Corby as time progressed.
Corby showed determination as strong as iron to leave the rest of the world in her wake.
The rise in repetitions – leading to 110 of them in total – seemed to hardly faze Corby who completed the workout in a time of three minutes and 40 seconds.
Her time put her just one second clear of her next closest competitor Kari Pearce of the USA.
Corby couldn’t believe she had finished as number one.
“On the Saturday afternoon they have two athletes do the live announcement, and it was two men this week. When I saw the scores they got I thought I might have got a competitive score,” she said.
“When I first saw my time I thought I might be in with a shot of finishing top five in Australia but nowhere near top in the world.”
Just for good measure the Workout also included component 18.2a, which required Corby to complete one repetition of a max clean within the 12 minute window.
Corby successfully lifted 206 pounds (93 kilograms) just a matter of minutes after completing the strenuous 18.2 component.
Prior to the calculation of the most recent weekend’s results Corby was sitting 17th in the Australian standings.
If Corby can stay inside the top 30 following the final two workouts then she will earn the right to compete at the Pacific Regional CrossFit Games.
The Pacific Regionals will bring together Australia’s top 30 and Asia top 10 finishers in a battle for a top five finish.
Should they achieve that then they will earn the right to compete at the CrossFit Games, to be held in Wisconsin this August.
Does Corby think she has a shot at competing on the world stage?
“I’m getting a bit too old for that now I think,” she laughed.
“I’ll still be going over there to watch. Our Aussie girls [Tia-Clair Toomey and Kara Webb] finished one and two in the last Games and it will be really exciting to watch this year. They’re just on a whole different level.”
The video of Corby’s remarkable performance has seen many people from across Bathurst and the Central West getting inspired.
Over 7,000 views have been counted on the live recording of Corby’s workout on the CrossFit 2795 Facebook page.
The CrossFit Open comes to a close on March 26.
