Announced by Member for Bathurst Paul Toole on Wendesday, $100,000 in funding from round one of the NSW Government’s Stronger Country Communities Fund will go towards the construction of the building at the Bathurst Bike Park.
The funding comes in perfect timing for the clubs, as they continue to grow and attract high profile events.
Mr Toole said the investment will provide residents with improved facilities that the whole community can enjoy.
“The number of participants have grown over the year but what we are lacking is a toilet facility not only for the locals who use it, but when we have major events and carnivals occurring,” he said.
“The facility is first class and we’ve seen a large number of events come here but it’s important that we make sure we grow upon our facilities.
“We are not building for tomorrow but for the future. We are building facilities that will last for 10 to 20 years.
“Stronger Country Communities funding is an investment into local infrastructure to improve the lives of residents and enhance the attractiveness of our region – this funding helps us to do exactly that.”
Bathurst BMX Club president Michael Breen said is excited for the upcoming upgrade, which is much needed.
“The track is one of the best tracks in Australia but when we have big events, we need to have places that can cater for masses of people,” he said.
“We need toilets and canteens. This has just been a massive blessing. We are so lucky.”
While Mr Breen said he may be a little bias, he said the track is the best BMX track in Australia.
However, the feedback he has received from pro BMX riders agrees with his opinion.
“We have five metre and eight metre hills, so we have facilities for the pros,” he said.
“The feedback I’ve had from the pros, they just love how it roles. It’s not too lippy, so that means the track flows. When we get it up to race speed, it’s so smooth and ready to ride.”
Bathurst mayor Graeme Hanger said the funding is terrific news for the club, the local economy and tourism in the area.
Further funding announcements for the Bathurst region will be made in the coming weeks with applications for round two now open.
