The carnival is set to attract thousands of fans, trainers and horses from across Australian and New Zealand, as some of the best two-year-old and three-year-old horses battle it out for the Gold Crown (two-year-old colts and geldings), Tiara (two-year-old fillies), Chalice (three-year-old colts and geldings) and Bracelet (three-year-old fillies).
While there’s plenty of action on the track, there’s plenty off it during the nine-day carnival and it’s sure to give a boost to the economy and tourism of the Bathurst region.
Bathurst mayor Graeme Hanger said it will be a good sight to see so many people descending on Bathurst for the carnival.
“The event draws a large number of visitors to the city, which in turn provides a significant boost to the local economy,” he said.
“It’s a great event. It’s one of the premier two-year-old races in the state.
“It’s not just the Gold Crown race. You’ve got the Gold Crown Honouree Dinner on March 27, for honourees Marie and Peter Neil. They’ve been people involved in harness racing in the region for a long time and are the most worthy recipients.
“With the Alan Davidson Shield in Bathurst on March 27 and 28, accommodation is going to be pretty full.
“Money will be going into the town and people will see how good Bathurst is. They’ll be wanting to come back again next year.
The dinner, hosted by Cr Hanger, will be held at the Bathurst RSL and will include a two course alternate menu.
Across the nine-day carnival, five race meetings will be held – including the final on March 31.
In 2018, the Gold Crown Carnival will celebrate the 32nd edition of the event.
Fashions on the Field will be held on the March 28 night meeting, which was been dubbed the Ladies Night.
It will be followed by an Ambrose Golf Day, at the Bathurst Golf Club from 12.30pm, with a cocktail party at Goldfields Mount Panorama that night at 7pm.
