Any number of regional cities would give anything to host the royal couple, with the potential international exposure that could come with having them here worth more than money could buy.
But with respect to the likes of Orange, Dubbo, Wagga, Albury, Armidale, Tamworth and even the Hunter Valley (which has been mentioned as the other likely candidate at this stage), there’s really only one horse in this race.
No other regional centre can come close to offering what Bathurst can provide for a young couple looking for day in the bush.
No-one in their right mind would go choose to go traipsing through the vines and mines of the Hunter when the option was a trip to Bathurst.
We know the city is a favourite of Harry’s grandmother (she has been here twice, after all) and we’re sure he and his new bride will love it as well.
The Western Advocate has put together our own “quick six” experiences for Harry and Meghan to enjoy, but they represent just a taste of what’s on offer.
We’ve included the traditional visitor experiences such as a trip to Annie’s Ice Cream or the Australian Fossil and Mineral Museum, along with a sample of gin (every Englishman’s favourite) at Stone Pine Distillery.
Then, of course, there’s the Mount – and nowhere can offer anything to match that.
Harry and Meghan will have to stick to the 60km/h limit but there is only one place in the world they will get the chance to drive on the globe’s best 6.213km of race track.
Add to that the fact Bathurst is the oldest inland settlement in the country (again, a title that no other town can claim) and our city is presenting an air tight case for the royal couple’s visit.
So put the champagne on ice and prepare the bunting: Bathurst is ready, willing and able to roll out a right royal welcome mat.
It’s not that Bathurst is better than the other cities that might hope to host Harry and Meghan, it’s just that the others aren’t as good.
And surely the royal couple deserves only the best.
