All positions and attributes that apply to Glenn Allen, the recent recipient of Bathurst Cycling Club’s 2018 Dave Carroll Memorial Trophy.
The trophy is awarded to the club’s biggest contributor and to the person who does everything in their power to ensure the club’s growth.
Allen was honoured the receive the award, named in honour of a person he knew well.
“I was quite surprised. I was a bit blown away because I knew Dave and raced against him. It was a bit emotional,” he said.
“It’s a great, friendly environment to be around at the club and everyone gets along and works together. I’ve raced for 15 to 20 years on and off with my brothers and now my nieces and nephews are racing.
“It’s not a big club, but it’s a longstanding one where everyone wants to get in and have a go.
Bathurst Cycling Club president Mark Simons said the long time club member is a worthy recipient of the special prize.
“He’s a Cycling Australia-credited commissaire which means he gets called away to judge and officiate at events.
“He’s part of our judiciary at the cycling club which is quite an honourable position because people in those positions have unpleasant decisions to make but they lay down the rules.

“He helps out a lot with juniors, especially with developing our cyclocross events. Inbetween all his volunteer work he gets the odd occasion where he rides a bike. He’s so passionate about the sport and gives everything for the club.”
Simons said its one of Allen’s roles away from the cycling sphere where he makes his most important contribution.
“He’s taken charge of the Mount Panorama canteen which the club runs. It’s the biggest fundraiser for the club every year. It’s a seven day job during the race and the amount of hours he puts in is incredible,” he said.
“He’ll be up early getting the canteen ready in the morning and he’s there right through the clean up making sure that the whole operation runs smoothly, just to make sure we’ve got a pool of resources and funding to use for the remainder of the year.
“From the committee’s point of view, even though we’re volunteers as well, he went above and beyond what we would expect from a normal club volunteer. People like that are very hard to come by.
“I wasn’t privileged enough to know Dave Carroll but from the stories I’ve heard he was of a very similar ilk – a very caring and giving person to all facets of the sport. Glen Carter was a very good friend of his and set this award up to honour those who carried that torch and that honourable role through.”
