Police are waiting on medical clearance to speak with the man and have yet to establish the motivation behind the attack.

Chifley Police District crime manager Chief Inspector Luke Rankin said the victim, aged 58, was inside his Rockley Road home around 10pm on Saturday when two men wearing balaclavas entered through the unlocked front door.

Police allege one of the intruders struck the victim to the head with a metal object before leaving the premises.

Chief Inspector Rankin said the victim made his way to the Bridge Hotel in Perthville where he sought help from staff.

Staff immediately called police and paramedics and the victim was taken to Bathurst Base Hospital with a head injury .

Detectives responded and a crime scene was established at the property.

"Police believe this was targeted," Chief Inspector Rankin said.

He said police canvassed the area on Saturday and returned to the area again on Monday to speak with potential witnesses.

He also urged anyone with information about the incident or anyone who may have seen men wearing balaclavas or acting suspiciously to contact either Bathurst detectives on 6332 8699 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
