A MAN has been committed to stand trial in the Supreme Court over the murder of a fellow inmate at Bathurst Gaol., Mark Dempsey Knight, 38, currently an inmate at Goulburn Gaol, has pleaded not guilty to murdering Craig Brookes Dally at Bathurst Gaol on March 27, 2000., Knight appeared in Bathurst Local Court where he was committed for trial to the NSW Supreme Court., Craig Brookes Dally was found lying in a pool of blood in his cell about 3.30pm March 27, 2000. , There were blood splatters on the wall and floor of the cell and shoe imprints on the floor., A post mortem on March 29 showed Dally had 21 wounds to his chest and abdomen and a further two defensive wounds in and out of his left forearm. The deepest wounds were 15cm long. , He also had a large wound across his throat which had severed his artery and jugular vein. , Knight's solicitor Mr Newman told the court his client had given a reasonable explanation to police in relation to his movements on the day of the murder. , He said this version was consistent with the evidence., Mr Newman said Knight's version was that he walked into the cell where someone was being killed and quickly left., An altercation with one of the assailants before leaving the cell explained a serious puncture wound to Knight's right hand., Mr Newman said blood may have been "splashed around” as Knight was defending himself and this could explain why his client's blood was found at the crime scene and in a boot that had left a trail of marks from the scene., Mr Newman said Knight didn't "raise the alarm” because he was "in a gaol situation”., He said the court could not be convinced that the Crown evidence was capable of satisfying a jury beyond a reasonable doubt of Knight's guilt., Full story in the Western Advocate.
