Committed on trial for murder charge

A MAN accused of stabbing to death a fellow gaol escapee with a screwdriver has been committed for trial in Bathurst Supreme Court., Bradley John Holland, 22, of South Terrace, Orange, has pleaded not guilty to murdering Shawn Allan Ellul at Turondale between December 3, 2001, and December 16, 2001., Holland and Ellul escaped from Bathurst Gaol on December 3, 2001., Ellul's body was found in bushland near a fire trail on December 19., Police recaptured Holland in Adelaide on December 27, 2001., Committal proceedings on the murder charge began late last year with several witnesses called., More witnesses were expected to be called for cross-examination yesterday, however the prosecution and defence were able to agree to committal by paper (based on written evidence)., Magistrate Elizabeth Corbett committed Holland for trial in Bathurst Supreme Court on a date to be fixed., Holland's solicitor did not apply for bail, which was formally refused., The Crown alleged on the first day of the committal hearing that Holland had stabbed Ellul more than 40 times - almost severing his head - at a bush camp near Coles Bridge, Turondale., Holland has pleaded guilty to a charge of escaping from lawful custody (Bathurst Gaol). , This matter was adjourned to Bathurst Local Court tomorrow.,
