THE push for a second race track at Mount Panorama is gaining momentum with former 500cc world championship rider Kevin Magee expected to cast his eye over the possible Grand Prix circuit some time in the next two weeks.

Chief designer of the circuit and former Superbike competitor Allan Cunynghame said he has been in contact with Mr Magee to get his thoughts on holding motorcycle races at Mount Panorama again.
“He [Kevin Magee] said he was interested in coming to the site and seeing the lay of the land,” Mr Cunynghame said.
“Magee just needs to find a gap in his work commitments before he can say when he’ll get here.
“I would also like to get Warren Willing here as he was involved in one of the most memorable races that ever occurred at Mount Panorama.”
The 4.8 kilometre design, which uses parts of Pit Straight, Mountain Straight, Conrod Straight and The Chase, is estimated to cost $20 million to build, but could one day be the home track for a future Australian Superbike or World Motor GP championships.
Late last year the NSW minister for Primary Industry, Ian Macdonald, met with representatives from the Bathurst Regional Council and expressed his interest in building the circuit as long as it could attract a national or international event.
“Further to Mr Macdonald’s visit in December last year, I have received an email from his office asking for a meeting to see how the track is progressing,” Mr Cunynghame said.
“It is good because I have done a lot of work but now the track is gaining a life of its own and I look forward to updating Mr Macdonald on the possibility of hosting a major event when we meet on February 10.”
Mr Cunynghame added what has been positive in the development of the second track is how very little ‘flack’ or negativity he has heard about the proposal.
“I have heard some people have said that the second track might take away from what Mount Panorama is, but I see another major event only enhancing the site as a motorsport mecca,” he said.
“Also the history of motorcycle racing at Mount Panorama is so strong with most of the past legends of the sport born here and it would be great have something like that back again.”
