The trucks have been taken out of service as part of an ongoing upgrade of Rural Fire Service (RFS) vehicles and are now for sale.
These machines can be used for all sorts of things, according to Chifley RFS learning and development/ operations officer Keith Meehan.
“They are quite handy trucks and they are all four- wheel drive which is rare these days,” Mr Meehan said.
“A lot of people use them on properties for their own fire protection or for carting water around. Some contractors strip them and use them on the farm.
Some just buy the four wheel drives, strip the pumps off the back and put a tray on them.
“They are all road worthy vehicles and are pink slipped every year by council but they are not registered.”
Mr Meehan said the engines had a lot of history behind them.
“There’s one that we bought rom Camden West second hand in 1996,” he said.
He said the vehicles have already been replaced as part of an ongoing upgrade, with the aim to have all of the engines in the current fleet under 15 years old and all diesel engines.
Bathurst Regional Councillors voted to sell the surplus engines at their monthly meeting last week by way of public tender.
A report to councillors said the normal process is for council to sell the vehicles with funds received (less tendering costs) to be remitted to the NSW Fire Service.
