Born at Bathurst Base Hospital at 7.24am on New Year’s Day, Alex Gelling was the first baby born in Bathurst in 2010.
Weighing in at 3610 grams, Alex is the couple’s second child. He is a little brother for Kyle who is 21/2. Michiko said Alex was running late – he was due to be born on December 28.
She is happy he is finally here because she had become tired of waiting.
Fortunately the couple had no new year’s eve plans.
“It’s hard to say if January 1st will be a good day for him to have his birthday or not,” his mum said.
“At least it will be easy for everyone to remember.”
Last year, 220 were born at Bathurst Base Hospital.
This brought the total number of babies born across the Greater Western Area Health Service to 1516 in the months leading up to November.
The area health service reports that 371 babies were born at Orange Base Hospital and 499 were born at Dubbo Base Hospital during this time.
Elsewhere in the area there were 101 births at Broken Hill Hospital and 64 at Cowra.
A total of 59 babies were born in Forbes Hospital, 112 at Mudgee and 71 babies born at the hospital in Parkes. A spokesperson for the area health service said there were a further 11 babies born in non-major Greater Western Area Health Service hospitals in 2009.
