The Junktion is a place where Bathurst residents can take unwanted furniture, electrical equipment, sporting goods and building materials, among many other things, and recycle them at no charge.
Recycled items will then be cleaned, or repaired if necessary, before being put out for sale to the general public.
“We are excited to bring this new initiative to Bathurst that has multiple benefits,”, Central West Care director Stephanie Stocks said.
By recycling items at The Junktion, rather than taking them to the Waste Management Centre, residents can save money by reducing the charge incurred at the Waste Management Centre. Importantly, by recycling, less waste is going into landfill and all recycled items will be sold back to the public at reasonable prices through the community shop, enabling Central West Care to expand its community services.
Central West Care already runs a wide range of programs and facilities that service the Bathurst region. The popular Bargain Centre in Russell Street retails a range of items, including clothes, books and general household items.
“Items such as these should still be brought to the Bargain Centre rather than to The Junktion, which is really set up to hold larger items, such as furniture, and all of the money that we make through The Junktion will go back into community services, so everyone wins,” Ms Stocks said.
One person’s trash really can be another person’s treasure and council is pleased to support the recycling initiative.
Mayor Cr Paul Toole said Bathurst residents already participate in many recycling programs, at home through kerbside recycling and at school through the introduction of recycling bins.
“We also have mobile phone musters throughout the year and now residents can bring their organic garden waste and E-Waste, such as old computers, to the Waste Management Centre,” he said.
“Every item that is recycled in Bathurst is helping our environment so it is great that there is now a way residents can recycle furniture and other bulky household items and continue to help improving our local environment.
“It is a great way for residents to save money by reducing the weight of the load they are taking to the Waste Management Centre. This is a great way to recycle items back into the community and, very importantly, it diverts waste from council’s landfill,” Cr Toole said.
The team at Central West Care have been busy stocking the shelves with a range of good quality, secondhand items.
The Junktion is open Monday and Friday, 9am to 4pm; Saturday and Sunday 9am to 3pm. For details of what type of items can be recycled at The Junktion phone 6331 4654 or visit council’s website www.bathurst.nsw.gov.au.
