POWERFUL determination and a drive to get his name on the winners' trophy again has seen Bathurst's Richard Hobson claim his second Dave Carroll/Dave Scott Memorial Triathlon victory in three years.
With champion athlete and 2009 winner Nick North taking a break from the sport, Hobson was always going to be hard to beat over the 300 metre swim, 16 kilometre bike ride and 2.5km run on Sunday.
Hobson said he had to give it his all during the race, but was pretty confident he could win after stepping out of the pool first.
Hobson, who will travel to Port Macquarie to compete in Ironman Australia on Sunday, crossed the line to resounding cheers in 40.18 minutes with rising junior talent Nathan Bankovic (41.54) second and Jake Thorton (43.18) third.
"The shorter races are always hard as you have to give it your all, but it was good, conditions were fast and I really enjoyed it," he said.
"This is a big day for me, the Waldo-Scotty memorial I always put it up there as a bit of a priority.
"I've got an Ironman event next week and did not have to do this, it is not ideal preparation. But like I said, this race means a lot to me so I had to do it."
In the women's race Orange's Christine Wolfson (43.57) finished her season off perfectly beating 15-year-old Laura Auberson (49.13) and Brooke Parker (50.23).
"This is just a special race, I love Bathurst, the club is really nice," she said.
“Howard Yen and Richard Hobson organise a great race and I wanted to finish the season with this race.
“I’ve had a really good season and felt good, my swim wasn’t that great but once I got on the bike I started to relax.”
This year marked the running of the third Dave Carroll/Dave Scott Memorial Triathlon, named in honour of two important and well known Bathurst residents.
It was the passing of Dave Carroll, who was nicknamed ‘Wallaby’, which resulted in the forming of the Bathurst Wallabies Tri Club in the 2005- 2006 season.
Regrettably, Dave Scott also died suddenly in 2007 and in honour of their contribution to the sport of triathlon, the Dave Carroll/Dave Scott Memorial Triathlon was established.
Bathurst Wallabies Tri Club president Yen said this year competitor numbers had grown with 30 juniors and 55 senior racers going around the course.
“The weather gods seemed to smile on this race,” he said.
“It is really good to see people who wouldn’t normally come to triathlons here at this particular race and doing the two guys [the race honours] proud.”
Once again the teams’ event was hotly contested and it was won by Yen, Ryan Sargent and Nick Lander.
In an added bonus for the Bathurst president, Yen was also awarded the Club Person of the Year for his dedicated work behind the scenes.
