The accident is believed to have occurred about 8.15pm when a Holden Commodore failed to take a right hand bend before slamming into a tree by the side of the road.
Bathurst police were left with the task of informing the Bathurst man's family of the tragedy yesterday morning. The 22-year-old was a passenger in the car.
It is believed the car was driven by a 21-year-old man who was arrested at a nearby house soon after.
The car was heading towards Perthville on the unsealed country road, which runs between the Mid Western Highway and the Vale Road, when the accident occurred.
Inspector Richard Maddox from Bathurst police yesterday said the alleged driver of the car was taken by ambulance to Bathurst Base Hospital with head injuries.
“Police came across the car, which was wrapped around a tree, while on patrol looking for an abandoned vehicle at the time,” he said.
“A short time later we received a phone call from a person at a nearby home alerting us to the fact a man had come to their residence suffering major head injuries with concerns he may have been in some type of accident.
“He remains in a serious but stable condition in Bathurst Base Hospital and investigators will interview him at a later date.”
Hen and Chicken Lane remained closed to traffic yesterday morning as a crime scene
was established and police investigations
commenced.
Senior Constable Colin Crome from the Bathurst Crash Investigation Unit was at the scene early yesterday morning along with Senior Constable Sarah Walker from the Bathurst Crime Scene Unit.
They were marking out the path of the vehicle and taking photographic evidence in an effort to piece together the chain of events in the moments before the Commodore slammed into the tree.
A report will be prepared for the information of the Coroner.
