Rather, Detective Inspector Rod Blackman yesterday described the incident on October 1, 2009 as a suicide intervention.

Inspector Blackman was recalled yesterday afternoon to give evidence before State Coroner Mary Jerram at Bathurst Court House, saying it was "a high risk incident but not a siege".

Detective Blackman said his definition of a siege would involve a hostage, threats being made, a shoot-out or occurrences that prevented police doing what they should do.

Counsel assisting the Coroner, Warwick Hunt, yesterday sought to correct errors in documents related to an original police computer system entry and a police media release that read "on approaching the vehicle the deceased pointed a shortened rifle ... and that the deceased has threatened a highway patrol officer with a firearm".

Detective Blackburn said his investigations revealed no threat had been made to Senior Constable Mark Hevers or any other person.

Ms Jerram is holding an inquest into the last hours of the man's life, who cannot be identified, after he was stopped for a random breath test by Senior Constable Hevers about 10.15am.

After hearing evidence from Constable Hevers and also a statement by a farmer who stumbled onto the stand-off after the deceased man had been pulled over and held a gun to his own head, Ms Jerram said the constable should be commended for bravery.

Constable Hevers had the presence of mind to switch on his in-car video. His negotiations before the deceased took his own life about 5.30pm had been recorded and were viewed by the coronial inquiry.

The family of the deceased asked Ms Jerram to place on record their thanks for the professional way Constable Hevers conducted himself for over an hour of tense one-on-one negotiations.

The inquest resumes this morning when the commander in charge of the incident, Superintendent Mark Szalajko, is due to give evidence.
