While allowed four members to contest the NSW Team Time Trial, Bathurst needed just three riders – Harrison Jones, Harrison Carter and Daniel Stibbard – to find success in the under 17 men’s division.
According to Glen Carter, who guided the Bathurst combination, being short one cyclist was never a concern.
“It wasn’t really a problem, all the boys are very close together and there are no real weak links,” he said.
“The boys had all been in good form, Harrison Jones had just returned from riding in New Caledonia, my bloke claimed the yellow jersey by winning all four stages at the Tour of Tamworth which I think is the first time anyone has done that, and Daniel did well in the Tour of Goulburn.
“All the boys do their own time trial training at the moment but they train together three times a week so they know each other pretty well.”
St George, the defending champions, went into the Central Coast based event as favourites but the Bathurst combination of under 17 duo Jones and Stibbard plus 14-year-old Carter were confident.
The Central Coast team were the first to tackle the 18.6 kilometre course, clocking a time of 31 minutes, 25.32 seconds.
Bathurst went next and bettered the standard with their 27:43.07, a mark the St George combination could not lower as they had to settle for second place with their 28:42.30.
“Saint George were definitely the club to beat, they were the defending champions, so to win was fantastic,” Carter said.
“To be honest it was disappointing only three teams entered in that age group, but the standard was certainly comparative to any other year.”
The under 17s combination was one of four teams Bathurst entered in the NSW Team Trial Event with two men’s open masters sides and a masters women’s team.
Racing over a 36.8km course, the men’s combination of Ryan O’Donnell, Jarrod Bell, Dennis Martin and Stephen Bennett improved two places on their 2009 effort to rank sixth overall with a time of 55:46.82.
The victory belonged to Eastern Suburbs who scorched home in 52:25.63.
“We had a lot stronger team combination this year but this year the standard of riders overall was a lot tougher unfortunately, I think there were 47 teams in our division,” O’Donnell said.
“We were really happy with our time, our reaction was initially we thought we might be a medal chance but we realised that wasn’t going to happen as more teams finished.
“The team that won it, their time was just sensational, the other top four or five teams were very close, but they just really smashed all the rest.”
The second Bathurst master’s men team of Mick Marshall, Mark Simons, Scott Allen and David Jones clocked a time of one hour, 23.43 seconds to place 20th.
Bathurst picked up another top 10 placing with their women’s masters team of Angela Jones, Rosemary Hastings, Tiffany Mason and Marian Renshaw who finished seventh.
They covered the 36.8km in a time of one hour, 21 minutes and 23.24 seconds, victory going to Eastern Suburbs for their 1.7:3137 effort.
