Some of the competitors were younger than young – a handful were only three and – four years of age and took part in special events designed just for them, including obstacle courses and high-kick competitions.

Later in the day things got a little more serious as some of the more senior fighters took part in a host of events and by day’s end over 360 divisions had been contested.

“We had a great day, it was a big success, a lot of the Sydney clubs who competed were rapt with how things went,” event organiser and host Hanshi Ian Pollet said.

“Man there was a lot of talent on show, there were some really entertaining fights. One guy got himself knocked out in a fight, I asked him if he wanted to keep going, he did, and he got up and won the fight. It was great to watch.

“And the little kids? What a success. I think we will probably have double the amount of competitors next time we hold this type of tournament.”

Pollet said that the star of the show on the day was Dubbo talent Angel Towney, who fought her way into the Grand Championship and also won the grappling, ju-jitsu and koshiki divisions.

“She has just excelled so much, she came to our dojo on an Aboriginal scholarship and has improved out of sight, her effort was one of the good stories on the day especially for the girls,” Pollet explained.

“I might put another tournament like this one on before the winter months next year, I don’t want to freeze the Sydney visitors.”

Pollet and his stable will be busy in the coming weeks, competing in Tamworth this weekend before turning their attention to the Muay Thai world titles in Newcastle in four weeks.

Another of his fighters has a K1 bout in Singapore in November.

“Everyone wants to see our fighters at the moment which is a great thing for us,” he said.

“We are just so fortunate to have so much talent within our facilities and they seem to keep on getting better.”
