The young family has faced challenges most of us couldn’t imagine. Australia will meet them when they feature on Monday night’s episode of The Secret Millionaire on WIN.
The new series puts six millionaires inside various communities – in disguise – to donate their own money to deserving Australians who are struggling to survive.
Tanya saw the promotional ads for the heartwrenching show for the first time on television yesterday and started to cry.
“I said to myself, ‘what are you doing? You’re crying at yourself’,” she laughed.
It’s understandable – to say their life has been a struggle would be an understatement.
Tanya and Evan Holmes are a couple in their early 30s with three children – Trace, Codee and Waryk.
Codee, 10 and her little brother Waryk, 5 both have cerebral palsy.
In a cruel twist of fate, their dad, Evan, suffered a brain injury in an accident at work.
Then in October last year, the day after the couple officially tied the knot, Codee had a massive seizure.
A few weeks later she started having a series of seizures and slipped into a coma. As a result she suffered a secondary brain injury and has spent the past 10 months in hospital.
“She has other issues now but she is still our smiley, bubbly Codee,” Tanya said.
“She fought coming into the world and she will fight to stay here with us. We now treat every new day as a blessing. As long as we’re together.”
After the family pays for its medical expenses, they are left with very little money.
Buying a van that could be equipped for Codee’s wheelchair seemed like an impossible dream. Suitable vans can cost anywhere from $50,000 to $90,000, with an extra $30,000 needed for fit out.
Then along came 43-year-old Sean Ashby who owns the multi-million dollar underwear and swimwear manufacturing and retail business aussieBum.
He is no stranger to hardship. He was unemployed when he started selling swimmers from his car. Now his business turns over millions a month.
When he met Tanya and her family he was moved to do something to help.
We don’t want to give too much of the story away but let’s just say the Holmes family now has their van and so much more – they have a new friend and champion who has demonstrated a generosity of spirit that has changed their lives.
“It is so hard to find the words without getting teary,” Tanya said.
“People assume a show like this is just about the money, but Sean has helped us in more ways than even he realises.
“The money has helped us provide what we need for our children but it is the personal and emotional support we have received from him that has been truly remarkable.
“He is an incredible person and I hope people watch the show and see just how amazing he is.
“He has become a member of our family. I class him as one of my very best friends now.
“This is something I could never have imagined. It has truly changed our lives.
“We’ve come such a long way and we owe that to Sean.”
