The fishing tackle of the late Garry Walker of Wallerawang has been donated to the Bathurst RSL Fishing Club to present as prizes to children at the fourth annual BCF Carp Blitz on the Macquarie River on Sunday, November 7.
Mr Walker died aged 68, leaving behind his small, quality collection of tackle including two rods and reels, landing net, waders and collection of flies and lures, his widow Honor Walker said.
"Garry would have wanted his fishing gear to be used just as he did when he was alive, thoroughly enjoying every bit of his fishing," Mrs Walker said when she presented the prize tackle this week.
"I can think of no better way than give Garry's waders, rods and reels and equipment to children to enjoy something that gave him so much pleasure.
"He loved his fishing, going down to the rivers and lakes around Lithgow, Portland and Wallerawang.
"He liked to fly fish for trout and had a nice two piece rod and reel that has the proper fly line set up just as he used it.
"Garry's waders are still in good condition, there's a little landing net as well as two boxes containing wet and dry flies to use to catch trout. There is also a larger fishing rod and reel and little tackle box with hooks and sinkers for bait fishing Garry used to fish for trout and other species of fish when ever he could find the time."
Mrs Walker contacted the RSL Fishing Club to ask that the fishing tackle should be given as a prize for the encouragement of a boy or girl taking part in the 2010 BCF Carp Blitz on the Macquarie River.
RSL Fishing Club secretary, Jim Beattie said Mrs Walker's gesture may have started something and other families of past fishers might like to consider repeating it in the future after the passing of a loved one, making fishing tackle prizes available for the next generation of fishers.
