Mosquitoes breeding in pools of water along the levee bank are causing residents in the area unnecessary grief.
Colin Ellis, who lives in Gilmour Street, has had about enough of the annoying creatures and wants council to get rid of their breeding grounds near his home.
His concern is with the levee bank built to help prevent flooding to the homes.
While the recent flooding in our region showed the levee bank works, Mr Ellis also discovered it prevents water from leaving the area, forming perfect breeding grounds for the mosquitoes.
In a creative email to Bathurst Regional Council, Mr Ellis asked when council was going to supply residents in the area with unlimited repellent to ease the situation.
“Now you may wonder why I have requested a free and unlimited supply of mozzie repellent but it is quite simple,” he said.
“When Bathurst Regional Council (BRC) constructed the wonderful ‘Great Wall of Gilmour St’ they forgot to make provision for water that backed up behind the wall to get away that works.
“So we are left with this mozzie breeding swamp every time it rains. It never seems to dry out, despite sunny breaks between the rain, because the water can’t go anywhere. It just lies around.”
Mr Ellis acknowledged council had done some work to try to get the water moving, but quickly added there were a few problems with the designs.
“Yes, Bathurst Regional Council did install drainage grates to catch the water, but these are all above water level, and drainage pipes to drain the water, but these are only partially in the ground, and so are partially above ground level and above the water level,” he wrote.
“The drainage pipes also run uphill towards the outlet. Maybe BRC think they can defeat gravity and be God-like and make water run uphill.”
Mr Ellis said he had only heard back from one councillor, who said his email was witty.
