Member for Bathurst Paul Toole paid the tribute to Mr Larnach as he told the parliament about a successful fundraiser organised by the Larnach family a
fortnight ago.
Mr Larnach was diagnosed with a rare adrenal gland tumour two years ago and was initially told he may have only a short time to live.
But following surgery he has dedicated his time to raising funds for cancer research at Sydney University.
Mr Toole told parliament he attended the fundraiser, which raised about $30,000.
“Last weekend’s fundraising dinner was regarded by Derek and his family as an opportunity to thank the community, his family, friends, co-workers and
medical staff for their support and assistance,” Mr Toole told parliament.
“Derek’s cancer has gone into remission but he still undergoes tests. However, he considers himself fortunate to still be with us.
“I pay tribute to his wife, Heather, his sons, Wes and Harry, and his daughter, Estelle, who organised the magnificent event to raise much-needed funds.”
Among the 262 guests at the fundraiser were Sydney University Dean of Medicine Professor Stan Sidhu and many of Mr Larnach’s long-time Bathurst friends.
“I pay tribute also to a number of Derek’s close friends,” Mr Toole said.
“Ian Macdougall stood by Derek during diagnosis and treatment. Ian also has been diagnosed with cancer.
“He and Derek formed a very strong friendship and were a strong support for one another during a difficult time.
“Derek’s mate, Michael Burke, gave up many hours to be by Derek’s side and to work with him during recovery.”
