Given it was his first time competing at a national level, the results were especially impressive.
With 114 other children from across NSW and a total of 500 students making the trip to Marrara Stadium in Darwin for the event, Lucas had plenty of competition but that didn’t stop him.
The talented youngster teamed up with Isaac Natoli, Tyler Barry and Andy Shorten to represent his home state in the athletes with a disability 10-12 years 100 metres race where they enjoyed an impressive win with teams from Queensland and ACT finishing second and third respectively.
The 11-year-old then backed up to contest the individual 100 metre sprint where he took third place and a bronze medal. He was just beaten by Kostya Fitzgerald from the Northern Territory and team-mate Barry.
Lucas’ teacher Nadine Dwyer said that his results were something to be proud of and that it was an experience he wouldn’t soon forget.
“Will had a great time. He wasn’t a big fan of the plane, but otherwise it was a really good experience,” she said.
“He was chosen for the NSW team to compete at nationals last year but couldn’t go, so this was the first time he had competed at that level.”
Lucas’ results add to what has been a good period of success for Carenne School students as fellow athlete Ashley Elphick picked up a gold and a silver medal at the NSW Combined High Schools Carnival earlier this month.
