While Mr Abbott is noted for his daring appearance in his Speedo togs, Bathurst MP Paul Toole isn’t being quite so flashy when it comes to his pursuits.
The former Bathurst mayor and current councillor is showing no signs of slowing down despite his increased workload and is a regular on local cricket pitches.
He’s a member of the Oxford Centennials third grade outfit and is proving to be something of a run machine.
Padding up beside Mr Toole is his brother-in-law and fellow councillor Warren Aubin.
Another councillor, Ross Thompson, should know better but he is also refusing to let age catch up with him and is a member of that thirsty thirds outfit.
Mr Toole might list cricket as his main interest outside of the Bear Pit in Macquarie Street, but he can also show a clean pair of heels when it comes to distance running events.
Not only does he have numerous Edgell Jogs under his belt, there’s also a half marathon to boast about.
His most recent conquest came at the Carcoar Running Festival in November.
Mr Toole got together with some mates to enter a team in the 42.2km marathon event – and they won.
Little wonder, though. He’d recruited the likes of hot-shot triathletes Richard Hobson, Nick North and Jody Parker.
“It’s all just a bit of fun,” Mr Toole said.
“There’s no way I would consider putting those Tony Abbott budgie smugglers [cossies] on, though.
“I’ve always been a cricketer and I thought that I would still like to play whenever I can.
“I can’t make it every week, but when I can be there it’s great fun. Sometimes I even make some runs.
“When it comes to running I am nothing special, but I can say I have finished a half marathon.
“Winning at Carcoar was great too, although I got to run the last 8.5km to the finish on the flat part of the course. My team-mates looked after me there.”
