That will be the red-hot topic of tonight’s debate at the Bathurst 2036 People’s Convention.
Members of the Bathurst Macquarie Lions Club will go head-to-head with the Rotary Club of Bathurst Daybreak, arguing that population growth would be positive for Bathurst.
Expect wit, whimsy – even an awakening – as both teams explore what the city would look like, should it reach the estimated population of 50,000 by 2036.
Teams will take the stage at about about 6pm, for what is expected to be a light-hearted look at the big issues facing the Bathurst region.
Local personalities Mick Whittaker, Michael Ryan and Ryan Cooney will argue the affirmative for the Bathurst Macquarie Lions; while Rotary Club of Bathurst Daybreak president Garry Taunton and fellow Rotarians Nick Anderson and Narelle Druitt will take the negative line.
“We’re going for laughs,” Mr Taunton said. “I think our arguments will be pretty creative. We’re relying on the popular vote.”
Mr Anderson said he’d heard one of their opponents was a lawyer (Ryan Cooney from Richard Steele & Co). “But we’re not intimidated,” he said.
Each speaker will have three minutes to convince the audience of their case.
The Bathurst 2036 People’s Convention is a chance for local residents to share their ideas for the future direction of Bathurst, to be used by council to formulate the Bathurst 2036 Community Strategic Plan.
The day-long forum will be held in City Hall at the Bathurst Memorial Entertainment Centre from 9am.
