Bathurst Regional Council is co-ordinating the survey that seeks solutions to the issue of pigeons nesting in the central business district, and also a better understanding of the problem.
Businesses and building owners are being asked to complete the survey with the information to be used in the development of a strategy to combat not only pigeons, but other introduced bird species as well.
Mayor Greg Westman said that through regular discussions with the business community it’s clear they are having problems with pigeons nesting in roofs and gutters and causing damage to buildings.
“Now we are asking them for information on where the problem areas are, and what actions are working,” he said.
Even businesses that do not have any issues are encouraged to complete the survey as there may be reasons why some buildings are impacted and others are not.
Bathurst region residents are also invited to complete their own survey regarding the pest bird species, including pigeons, starlings, mynas and sparrows.
“We are seeking as much information as possible by also asking the community what issues they are experiencing with introduced bird species, and how they impact on their homes and farms,” Cr Westman said.
“We know that pest birds can have an impact on crops and can compete with native animals, and this information will help us develop a plan to combat the problem.”
Surveys are being distributed to businesses in the CBD and can be completed online at www.bathurst.nsw.gov.au/bird-survey.
Copies of the survey can also be collected from the civic centre in Russell Street.
Bathurst Regional Council is asking that the surveys be completed and returned by Monday, February 20.
It is expected the Pest Bird Management Plan will be completed in March.
