The Sydney Morning Herald yesterday published an exhaustive analysis of data from the latest MySchool update, including a ranking for the state’s primary and secondary schools.
All Saints’ ranked 131st among primary schools and 126th in the high schools, but Head of College Peter Miller said it was important to remember this is just one assessment method used by schools.
Dr Miller said it was terrific to see the quality teaching at the school and the relationships between teachers and students reflected in the NAPLAN score.
He said NAPLAN testing is most valuable for the data it provides which is useful in tracking an individual student’s performance.
“In this way it is helpful to both parents and teachers,” he said.
“There was some concern about NAPLAN in the community initially, but the dust has settled on that.”
But Dr Miller warned against reading too much into the figures published in the Herald.
“You do have to be careful when you look at league tables,” he said.
“A lot of schools are doing amazing things that don’t rate as highly as others on the table.”
Dr Miller said All Saints’ was a comprehensive school with a wide range of abilities represented.
Classes also tend to be small, which means the school can have large swings in its NAPLAN rankings from year to year. Larger schools tend to score more consistently from year to year.
Yesterday’s league table also showed funding discrepancies, with other local schools receiving a lot more government money than All Saints’ attracts.
Dr Miller wants to see the integration of students with a disability supported with the right level of resources.
He said currently funding is not transportable if a student with a disability transfers from a government school to an independent one.
“We receive nothing near the level of funding in the government sector,” Dr Miller said.
