The three-car team finished 11th, 13th and 14th outright in yesterday’s endurance race, but will take the gong for best display of community spirit when they donate funds to the Cancer Council’s Relay For Life.
The “home” team set-up a racing simulator at the Mount to raise funds for the initiative.
Nik O’Donnell from GWS Motorsport said that, for a gold-coin donation, members of the public could put their driving ability to the test in an effort to win an adrenalin-fuelled prize.
“Everyone loves it and it draws a crowd. It’s nice to get the public involved in what we do,” Mr O’Donnell said. “We started doing it last year and we raised $600 for Relay For Life.
“We get a good deal from Troytons in Orange, who set it up.”
The driver of the fastest lap time will be invited to Wakefield Park to take a spin in the team’s BMW 130i.
But the simulator was just one facet of the GWS Motorsport garage over the weekend.
As well as tapping into social media networks to promote their brand, the team will use footage from its time-lapse cameras to put together footage from the 1day for review.
The three-car team boasts nine drivers and a crew of 25. Team manager Garry Mennell said the Bathurst 12 Hour was a challenging start to the racing season.
