Nathan John Michael Masclet, of Monty Walk, Bathurst, is charged with wounding a person with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, assault occasioning actual bodily harm and recklessly causing grievous bodily harm.
The incident happened between 3.10am and 3.20am on Saturday at a Bathurst hotel.
Legal Aid solicitor Leigh Haywood said if granted bail, Mr Masclet would continue to reside with his grandmother, who was in the court on Monday with other family members.
She said while the accused’s mother and siblings live in Bathurst there has been a longstanding arrangement for Mr Masclet to live with his grandparents.
Ms Haywood said the accused’s record was not especially extensive, however, Magistrate Jan Stevenson said it did show similar offences.
Ms Haywood added that the matter was one that will take considerable time to resolve.
The facts show someone using a glass to cut someone’s face, Ms Stevenson said.
“Factually, that’s the case, but it is extremely complex,” Ms Haywood replied.
Finally, Magistrate Stevenson said she granted bail with some hesitation.
“You need to think about how you are living your life, Mr Masclet,” Ms Stevenson said.
“It’s not looking too flash at the moment.
“I’ll be clear. There is hesitation on my part, so if you breach bail you might have to go to the Supreme Court.”
She added conditions that the accused reside with his grandmother, not enter licensed premises, and report to police.
She adjourned the matter to Bathurst Local Court on April 16 for mention.
In addition, she asked the police prosecutor to direct the matter to licensing police.
She asked how an intoxicated person could leave a hotel with a glass in hand.
“Someone wasn’t looking at the responsible service of alcohol,” she said.
