About 25 grand old cars are expected in Bathurst on the weekend of October 25-27, with Bathurst Regional Council agreeing to close Russell Street on Saturday, October 27 for the Thunderbirds to be publicly displayed and judged.
Ford’s US headquarters began producing the Thunderbird in 1955 and the car has become a symbol of ’50s youth and the early days of rock ‘n’ roll.
A report to council said the Thunderbird Owners Club of Australia was a relatively small group and it was expected that only 50 to 60 people would be visiting the city with the concours.
But councillors agreed to waive the $1000 fee for closing Russell Street and to also host a mayoral reception for the visitors on the Friday.
The three-day concours will also feature a cruise around Mount Panorama, a barbecue at the Gold Panners Motor Inn, presentation dinner at Bathurst Panthers and a Sunday lunch in Tarana.
