Ruby lost her grandfather – Ray Morcom of Ray Morcom’s Auto Body Repairs – to lung cancer seven years ago. He was 63.
At just 11 years old Ruby is passionate about the battle against the disease that claimed her grandfather’s life.
Ruby’s goal is to help other people who are battling cancer, and to spread the word about why she cares.
“I don’t want to see anyone go through what I did when my grandfather died,” Ruby said.
So her hair is coming off in a bid to raise money for cancer.
Though some young girls might find the thought of
shaving their heads horrifying, Ruby is up to the challenge. “It’ll grow back,” she said.
Ruby will be shaving her head on May 6 at the Sydney Football Stadium – the same day the Sydney Roosters will go head-to-head with the Newcastle Knights.
The date was chosen because Ruby is “a big Roosters fan”.
Ruby’s hair will also be donated to Locks of Love, to be made into wigs for children suffering from long-term
medical hair loss from any diagnosis.
Ruby hopes to raise $10,000 for the ACRF and encourages people to reach out and help her achieve her goal.
“It’s just a really worthy cause,” she said.
