He might be a Bathurst High School student, but Felix Quinn can’t wait to get to Knox Grammar School next month.
That is where he will represent the NSW Combined High Schools at the NSW All Schools Rugby Union Under 16s Championships.
The 16-year-old has been named as one of the centres for the CHS Sky Blue team which will play at the June 20-21 tournament and in lead up fixtures over the coming month.
Heading into the selection trials, the Year 11 student was hopeful to gain a spot in the team, but Quinn was still surprised to learn he had made the cut.
“I had no idea I’d make it. I was completely thrilled to get in. It’s a big achievement in my rugby career,” he said.
“Our school doesn’t actually have a rugby union team, so that’s pretty big for my school to not just get in, but even try out for it.”
The selection process has been a long one for Quinn.
“In 2013-14 I was in a program called the Junior Gold Cup and from that the public school kids got asked to try out for this. There were three other discovery days across the rest of New South Wales and they picked the best of those to trial on May 15,” he said. “This Friday I’ll have training at Endeavour Sports High. By the sounds of it we won’t have much training, considering how much we have to play.”
The best match practice Quinn can get is through a rival code – the Bathurst High student a member of the Bathurst Panthers under 16s team.
“I play rugby league, so the only training I get is for that code. Everything else I guess I have to wing it,” he said.
“I certainly do miss playing more union. Hopefully, next year I can play under 19s for Bathurst Bulldogs.”
This Sunday sees Quinn and his team take on AICES under 16s in a trial match.
The team will also have a trial match on June 14 against the Combined Catholic Colleges side.
