It is expected that Mr Jennings will be running against long-standing Calare MP John Cobb, however he believes the National Party representative could still be subject to change.

"I think his use-by date has expired, but it is still not clear whether Gary Rush or someone else will be selected," Mr Jennings said.

Mr Jennings will also be competing for the seat against the newly announced Nick Zenophon Team (NXT) candidate Rodney Bloomfield.

While he may not be viewed as much of a threat as Mr Cobb, Mr Jennings is certainly not discounting him from the race.

"He certainly will be a form of competition, but probably put it in the micro-party category; the question will be where his preferences flow," he said.

"I imagine that Nick Xenophon's a very respected parliamentarian, in my eyes, and a man of decency, including having a plan for manufacturing in Australia and Labor supports that, rather than just cutting the car industry out of existence."

If elected for the seat of Calare, Mr Jennings has a few areas he would like to focus on.

At a federal level, he intends to improve education with a full Gonski reform package, properly deliver the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS), ensure a high quality NBN roll-out, improve superannuation "for the average working Australian", allow same-sex marriage within the first 100 days of parliament and ease the cost of living pressures by not raising the GST but rather taxing billion dollar multinationals.

In the Central West, he wants to make tourism more of a priority, push farming interests and embrace renewable energy.

"Tony Abbott took us back about 50 years, Malcolm Turnbull has brought us up to the 1990s, but we need to be focused on now and the future, and Labor is," Mr Jennings said.

Mr Jennings said he also hopes to further recognise Aboriginal people and their culture in communities, and is taking an active stance on this by enrolling at Charles Sturt University next year to learn how to speak the Wiradyuri language.
