WHEN Chelsea Angelo did her first racing lap of Mount Panorama in 2014 it fulfilled one of her ambitions, but next year when she returns to Bathurst it will be in pursuit of another.

The 19-year-old who grew up watching the Bathurst 1000 each year will get the chance to race at the iconic circuit in a V8 Supercar next October as a member of the Dunlop Series.
The category acts as a feeder to the V8 Supercars series, so the switch will be a big step up for Angelo. She will drive for Dragon Motor Racing in a Garry Rogers Motorsport-built VEII Holden Commodore.
“I have been working hard to get into the Dunlop Series for a long time and I’m just so grateful to Dragon and everyone involved for giving me this great opportunity,” Angelo said.
“I certainly don’t underestimate the challenge ahead. Joining the V8 Supercars Dunlop Series on a full-time basis will be a big step up, but I feel that I have taken the right steps throughout my career and working with such a professional team will put me in good stead for a positive year in 2016.”
While Angelo has prior experience at Mount Panorama after taking part in the Bathurst Motor Festival, her laps came in an open wheeler as a member of the Formula 3 series.
In her race debut she clocked a best lap time of two minutes, 4.7725 seconds – an effort faster than Greg Murphy’s ‘lap of the Gods’.
The Dallara F307 she drove back then is vastly different to the Commodore she will race next year, but she does have an idea of what she will face.
“I was a big ambition to drive here, I never thought I would be here at Bathurst driving one of Australia’s fastest cars,” she said.
“The trickiest parts probably have to be over the top, as you have got to hold it flat in these cars and going down through The Esses and The Dipper is fairly tricky.
“It was a challenge when I first went out there.”
Angelo has also spent time behind the wheel of a V8 before, making a one-off appearance at this year’s Clipsal 500 in the Dunlop Series. She also tested at Winton in November.
When she arrives at Bathurst next year, she will be one of two full-time females in the series. The other is Renee Gracie, a driver who made her Bathurst 1000 debut this year alongside Simona de Silvestro.
“Go the girls! Great to see Chelsea Angelo’s plans to contest next year’s Dunlop Series,” Gracie posted on her Twitter account.
“Another up and coming female driver entering mainstream motor sport.”
It is a case of mutual admiration for Angelo
“I definitely look up to [Renee and Simona],” she said.
“My main goal is to get into the V8 Supercars.
“Seeing all these women in sport doing so well just makes me more motivated to do the same and to push girls [and show] that you can do as well as what the guys can do in sport. Why not?”
The 2016 Bathurst 1000 event, where Angelo and her fellow Dunlop Series drivers will act as part of a support program, will run from October 6-9.
