But he was wrong. By the time he went to sleep that night, Suttor was not only a national champion, but a member of the Australian Schoolboys squad as well.

“It is pretty special,” the 18-year-old said of his selection.

“I was pretty surprised to even make the New South Wales side, I was in New South Wales seconds. We played New Souths Wales ones in the final and beat them, I think 22-5. Then I got selected in the Australian team which was pretty cool.

“I wasn’t expecting it at all actually. They have picked a squad of 25 and there is one extra person they haven’t named yet to come into it too.”

A talented second-rower, Suttor gained his passion for rugby from his father Don.

“Yeah, Dad was pretty excited when I got selected,” Suttor said.

“He always loved rugby, so I just used to watch the games with him and he got me into it. I actually started with the Bathurst Burrs and I have just kept playing since then.”

Suttor is currently a Year 12 student at The Shore School in Sydney, where he is a member of their first XV which plays in the NSW Greater Public School competition.

He impressed enough for Shore to be selected in the GPS seconds and from there earned a spot in the NSW seconds team which contested the national titles in early July.

“It was a bit different because you are playing with people you don’t know and there were some bigger boys definitely at state level,” Suttor said.

“I learned a lot, you get new coaches so you learn a lot of different plays and all that jazz.”

Suttor is now thinking ahead to what will be another step up and the highlight of his rugby career thus far.

“We have a training camp in September, then we go off to Samoa and after that New Zealand,” he said

“We are playing like a tri-nations series with Fiji and New Zealand, there are going to be some big boys in those teams. We play one game in Samoa and three in New Zealand. I have never played anything like that before, it’s going to be unreal.”
