Crews arrived to find the fire spreading to nearby grassland in hot, windy conditions.
NSW Rural Fire Service Superintendent Greg Sim said it appears the heat in the combustible materials at the tip ignited the fire.
Crews remained on scene late into the afternoon with heavy plant equipment, bulk water supplies and firefighting foam brought in to extinguish the blaze.
