Bowls Report from Majellan Bowling Club

Social Bowls
John Hobson and Jim Clark scored the game and rink win 27-20 against Paul Kennedy and Kevin Howard in the Tuesday Social Bowls competition this week, after a battle royal. The Hobson team struck first with a four but it was even after the fourth end and again after the eighth, the 11th and the 13th with both teams fighting hard. In the 14th end the Hobson team delivered a killer blow with a six and led from there on. Scoring in all but two of the final nine ends, they overwhelmed the Kennedy team who managed their own six in the 20th end. Ken Hartwig, Terry Clark and Tim Pickstone scored a narrow 21-20 win over Tony McNamara, Bob Bembrick and Gus Thurgood in a last end come from behind burst. The McNamara team held sway for much of the match getting underway with a three, but the Hartwig team scored a six in the fifth end to take a one shot lead.
It was even after the seventh and 12th ends but a five in the 16th by the Hartwig team gave them an 18-15 lead which the McNamara team took from them by the 20th by one shot. A two in the last by the Hartwig team was enough to give them the win. Tony Hogan and Bruce Parr were back in the winner’s circle with a 29-16 win over Darrell Bellamy and Peter Stueckradt after the game was even after the first seven ends.
The Hogan team collected nine points in a four end run that had them sitting at 18-10 in the 11th and the Bellamy team could not recover. A further 10 shots over a four end run pushed the Hogan team lead out to 28-13 after the 17th and it was all over. Tiger Smith, Ian Dews and Ron McGarry scored a 34-17 win over Allan Clark, Barry O’Keefe and Frank Farrell, despite the Clark team’s attempts to stay in the match in the early ends.
A four end run from the sixth for 13 points to give the Smith team a lead of 18-5 after the ninth, was the beginning of the end for the Clark team and the final blow was an eight point run in the final four ends. Just the one rink of Twilight bowlers on Friday night however, the rest of the green was full of young bowlers from the Presbyterian Church Youth Fellowship who enjoyed the fun of lawn bowls under lights. The cooler conditions were appreciated by all participants and it was a great opportunity to introduce new enthusiasm into the game and Majellan Bowling Club.
The forecast for Saturday was for the temperature to be the hottest ever recorded in Bathurst and it didn’t disappoint. Three Championship matches were played and eight hardy souls played in the Saturday Afternoon Social Competition. Paul Kennedy and Ron McGarry took the Rink Win with a 15-12 score over Tony Urza and Jim Patton after 15 ends. The Kennedy team were down 11-1 after the eighth end but in a never say die approach, powered home and with a five in the final end claimed the win. Darrell Bellamy and Terry Clark were relentless in their 18-11 win over Barney Lavelle and Bob Jenkins with the scores even after the second, fourth and sixth ends. A three in the seventh end gave the Bellamy team a three shot lead which they held until the Lavelle team scored a four in the 10th to steal the lead by one shot. A four end run for eight points pushed the Bellamy team out to 16-9 and the Lavelle team ran out of ends to close the gap.
Club Championships: In a 2017 Major Singles Championship match this week Mick McDonald scored a 31-17 win over Glen Urza in a dominant performance. Urza jumped with a two in the first which was matched by McDonald and then Urza rebounded with a one but McDonald came back with a three and he was never headed from there. By the 10th McDonald had the lead 11-7 and by the 20th at 21-12 and he reached 31 by the 28th end.
In a second Major Singles match, Noel Witney defeated Peter Naylor in a game that was all even after the sixth end, but which was dominated by Witney from then on. Naylor opened his account with a two in the second but Witney matched the score and was never really troubled in the match. Both bowlers had trouble dealing with the heat but Witney seemed to deal with the conditions better than Naylor to post a good win.
In a 2017 Major Pairs Championship match, Mick Tremain and Craig McIntosh took just 19 ends to post a 27-8 win against Garry Cameron and Gus Thurgood in heatwave conditions. The Cameron team scored early but first points came for the Tremain team in the third end with three to take a slender lead. It was even after the fourth and sixth ends but from here the Tremain team scored 14 points in a five-end run to lead 17-5 after the 10th end and it was all over. The Cameron team scored in just three of the next nine ends.
