A five-week makeover in the outdoor areas at Goodstart Early Learning Bathurst hasn’t just given the centre’s children more to play with, it’s given them more to think about.
“We wanted to get rid of the plastic and synthetics and add more natural spaces,” centre director Emma Kentwell said.
“It gives the children the opportunity to use their imaginations a little more.
“Our aim with the new environment is to encourage the children to be actively involved in being environmentally friendly and embed sustainable practices.”
Among the additions to the centre’s yard are sandpits with a running splash pond and hand pump, plants, shrubs, dirt and rocks, paths to lead to further exploration and a mud kitchen with its own tap, kitchen sink and containers for whipping up something special.
Ms Kentwell said the hand pump, which is linked to the centre’s water supply, will only have a certain amount of water available each day to teach children about using a finite resource.
She said the centre wanted to thank Bathurst Landscapes for bringing its vision to reality: a natural outdoor play space where children can “challenge themselves while taking healthy risks”.
