In wet conditions at the Bathurst track Mandrake Mae ($3.40) made it two wins from as many career starts when taking out the Ladbrokes Odds Boost 0-2 Wins Final (307 metres).
Mandrake Mae let from start to finish out of box three and relished the muddy track as he won in an impressive time of 17.66 seconds.
“He’s a very smart pup. I took him up here three weeks ago and he ended up running 17.62 first look at the place and I thought that was a really good run,” handler Leo Vanderburg said of the young runner, trained by Richmond’s Paul Boyd.
“That’s a good run today. What he’ll do now all depends on whether he can get up to the 400 and 500m. I think he will be only time will tell.
“It’s a big thrill for the owner. He’ll be absolutely rapt. He puts a lot of money and time into this.”
The race claimed several early causalities when widest starters Papa George and Dana Zeke fell due to contact.
Race favourite Lochinvar Zara ($3) also got caught up in the collision. She avoided falling but was immediately written out of the winning equation.
Out in front Mandrake Mae had already built up a two length lead over Katie Taro ($7.90) midway through the turn.
That margin only grew further when the field swung for home.
At the winning post Mandrake Mae had put five metres between himself and Katie Taro.
Dana Ali ($4.90) was third.
