The Year 8 division one girls Denison College and Year 10 division one boys Kelso High teams produced sublime volleyball when it mattered most to win the gold, while Harriet Fitzsimmons and Deua Berry were named respective MVPs in the finals.

The boys team won 19 straight sets to start their campaign and kept their momentum going into the final when took out the title 25-23, 21-25, 15-11 against Brighton.

"They're the team who placed sixth in honours last year so we brought them back to division one this time and I think this result indicates that they've found their place," Kelso High School volleyball coach Jerry Sheader said of the winning boys side.

"They didn't lose a set until the second last game. They were incredible to watch.”

The victorious Kelso girls team narrowly qualified for the championship pools and then scraped into the top four.

They knocked over Monbulk 26-24, 25-18 in the semi-final and then rolled Benowa 25-14, 25-16 in the final.

"They lost their first game, drew the second then went on to win every game after that all the way to the final. They just kept going from strength to strength and it was an amazing run,” Sheader said.

"Our opening pool was really strong. The top three went on to beat the top teams in all of the other pools. Every game was a big battle.

"I was so impressed because from the second set of that second game their strength as a unit grew. When someone had a bad year point they all came together to give support."

Berry’s performance was the last for him in Kelso colours, as he prepares to leave Bathurst on a scholarship to the Australian Institute of Sport next year.

"It's really the start of the beginning for him now. He's heading off to Lake Ginninderra and has an amazing opportunity to take his game to new places," Sheader said.

"He'll have the chance to work towards something like a scholarship in the US if he maintains this level of ability. He's got a big future in the game."

The next best result for the school was a silver in the Year 8 Boys Division two competition.

Kelso’s Year 7 division two teams finished fifth and 11^th. The second of the Year 8 Denison College teams finished in 11th in division three. The Year 10 division three girls and boys were fourth and fifth respectively.

"I think the surprise packet was the division two boys team in year eight, who got the silver medal. Two of them got asked to stay back for the Australian junior camp over the week and the team were a force to be reckoned with,” Sheader said.

"I think the most important thing for us is that all our teams train together. Our Year 10 teams play our years 8's and our A teams play against the B teams.

"Without that our teams wouldn't be pushing each other as hard."

Tyler Pears, Hamish Alexander, Macson Alexander and Berry stayed back in Melbourne as part of the Australian junior camp.
