THIS is a slower paced time of year to be sure. I have to confess to often doing a quick dash into a new gallery exhibition and wishing I had more time to linger.

You will need a bit of extra time to do justice to the video installations in Montages: The Full Cut, 1999-2015 Tracey Moffatt & Gary Hillberg, on now at Bathurst Regional Art Gallery.
Also showing is James Capper’s engineering art in Mark Maker and some treasures from the collection in [Un]packed. Open Tuesday to Sunday.
Hit the trail
THIS weekend could be the time to tick a few more artist studios off the list as you explore the Bathurst Arts Trail.
A number of artists’ studios will be open to the public on Saturday, January 6 and Sunday, January 7 from 10am to 4pm.
See bathurstartstrail.com.au for directions.
Regional arts
FURTHER afield the Orange Regional Gallery is currently showing the 2017 Kedumba Drawing Award, plus an Elisabeth Cummings retrospective and works that explore the human figure.
They’re open daily 10am-4pm.
The Cowra Regional Art Gallery is showing a special retrospective for the 40th anniversary of their acclaimed Calleen Award.
The Cowra Regional Art Gallery is open from Tuesday to Sunday.
And the Grenfell Art Gallery has a delightful travelling exhibition of the work of May Gibbs running January 19 to February 2.
Entry to all regional galleries is free.
Elvis highlights
OF course the Parkes Elvis Festival (January 9-14) is the big summer event in this region.
Highlights will be the exhibition American Visionary, John F. Kennedy’s Life and Times at the Coventry Room next to the Parkes Shire Library (strange to think but it would have been JFK’s 100th birthday this year).
Phil Emmanuel stars in this unique solo show Guitars of the Era (Friday, January 12 from 2-3pm at Parkes’ Little Theatre) and an hour-long symposium, with expert panel members including Glenn A Baker discussing the early musical influences impacting on a young Elvis on Saturday, January 13 4pm-5pm also at the Little Theatre in Parkes.
Go to www.parkeselvisfestival.com.au for all the details.
