But a shawl presented to a new mother by the Bathurst Base Hospital Auxiliary on Tuesday meant just as much when it was handed over.
Auxiliary president Jill Mitchell and member Aileen Hough continued a decades-long tradition when they visited Sarah Mobbs in the maternity unit to give her a hand-crafted shawl made by one of the auxiliary members.
It was in recognition of Mrs Mobbs and her husband Graham’s notable new arrival Alex Albert Graham Mobbs – the first baby born at Bathurst Base Hospital for the year.
Mrs Mitchell said the auxiliary had a busy time in the 2016/17 financial year, donating $148,000 worth of equipment to the hospital, including an ECG Lifepak, hysterscope, colposcope, portable bladder scanner, outdoor tables and chairs, liver scanner and blanket-warming cabinet.
She said the auxiliary, which has almost 60 members, receives requests from the management of the hospital about equipment the facility needs.
“It can be large pieces of machinery for the theatre or can be more simple things,” she said. “Sometimes it might be just a bladder scanner or mattress covers to make it more comfortable for patients.”
The auxiliary operates the kiosk and cafe at Bathurst Base Hospital and uses the profits to buy the equipment it donates.
