Bathurst will experience an Australian first next week when the musical We Will Rock You is performed for the inaugural time by a cast of school students.
The musical is based on a book written British comedian Ben Elton and uses the songs of rock band Queen.
The performance will feature 70 students from St Stanislaus’ College and MacKillop College who will form the show’s cast, crew and band.
Choreographer and producer Victoria Hughes said it was a huge honour for students to get the rights to perform the show.
“It’s about the demise of music in the future,” she said.
“Every song is [written by] Queen which is great because everyone knows Queen.”
We Will Rock You is set 300 years in the future, the Earth has been renamed as the iPlanet and everything is under the control of the Globalsoft Corporation.
“All [musical] instruments are banned and all music is made by computers,” Ms Hughes said.
But, in steps Galileo Figaro, who will be played by George Sargent.
“He’s trying to bring back real music with his group of bohemians,” Ms Hughes said.
“It’s got some very funny lines in it, but it’s still very family-friendly.”
The other main lead of Scaramouche will be performed by Louise Hill.
In another coup for the students and audience, well known Australian actor David Wenham, who appeared in The Lord of the Rings film trilogy among many others, has pre-recorded a voiceover for the show’s introduction.
Mr Wenham is the brother to Stannies’ head of college Dr Anne Wenham.
Auditions were held last November and students have been in rehearsal ever since.
“They’re pumped now that they’re in costume and make up and hair. They’re so excited,” Ms Hughes said.
We Will Rock You will take to the stage at Stannies’ Performing Arts Centre for four nights from March 21-24.
“Tickets are selling quickly, but there is tickets available for each performance,” Ms Hughes said.
Tickets cost $15 adults, $10 students and $30 for a family and they can be purchased from the office of either college or on the door on the night.
