MANDURAMA trainer Stephen Cleary celebrated a quinella in Monday’s opening race at Kennerson Park.
Durama Dream ($22.20) snared the upset over her kennel mate Durama Gas ($1.90 favourite) in the Duke’s Ladbrokes Previews Maiden (307 metres) to snap her 17-race winless run.
Only half a length separated the the full brother-sister duo (Fabregas x Not So Smart) at the winning post.
Getting the breakthrough win was no easy task for Durama Dream, who started the race at the longest odds runner.
A brilliant start set up Durama Dream for a promising run but she was joined in no time at all by Shiwen Express ($10.30) on her inside.
Durama Gas and Rockstar Stumpy were just over a length away from the leading duo heading into the turn.
Shiwen Express got as much a length clear before the Durama duo reeled her back in.
With less than 20m to race Cleary’s pair raced by either side of Shiwen Express – Durama Dream on the outside and Durama Gas on the inside.
Durama Dream had the faster finish and narrowly won in a thrilling conclusion.
Her winning time was 18.20 seconds.
Durama Gas has now finished second in his first two starts.
“She performs very steady. She’s been racing really well but hasn’t had much luck,” Cleary said of his winner.
“She’s actually better than him [Durama Gas] but hasn’t had the luck. She’ll be looking for more distance now.
“Now that she’s won I’ll be able to get her into the races I want her in.”
