TRACY Sorensen has a good point in referring to the plight of elm trees (“Cool thinking to beat heat”, April 14), but I would draw attention to the higher evaporation rate as being a serious effect of higher temperatures.

My property at Eglinton has dams on it which had water in them most of the time, but now are dry permanently.
Subsoil moisture is so depleted that when rainfall occurs, little finds its way very far down.
This reduces productivity and will no doubt lower run-off into water catchments such as Ben Chifley Dam. Thus everybody will be affected.
