Thanks to a second half fightback the Saints managed to do just that on Sunday afternoon, getting home 16-10 against the Oberon Tigers to complete a clean sweep of all four grades.
The premier league win has kept the Saints on top of the ladder. They now boast three wins from as many games.
Pat’s had gone into the second half down 4-0 courtesy of a Josh Rivett try in the 23rd minute.
The hosts dominated either end of the second half to keep their perfect start to the season intact.
A brace from Chris Kirby inside the last 20 minutes of the game swung the match in the Saints’ favour.
Pat’s captain-coach Greg Behan was thrilled to make the Jack Arrow Park debut a success.
“We spoke a lot through the week about making this ground a fortress. What better name to start it off with than the head of Oberon?” he said.
“We knew we had to get off to a good start in that second half. It just came down to our energy. We defended over and over and the boys were out there working for each other.
“In the first half we missed a few 50-50 calls. We’d have scored if a few more things had come off but they started to go our way in the second half.
“Credit to the Oberon boys. That was a tough, tough game. I’m proud of our boys coming away with two points.”
Zac Merritt almost scored the opening try for the Saints in the sixth minute but his barnstorming run ended just shy of the Tigers’ line.
Between returning Tigers halfback Luke Branighan and five-eighth Ben McAlpine Oberon’s kicking game constantly kept the hosts under pressure in the first half.
Josh Merritt’s 40-20 attempt sailed out on the full and the Tigers were able to capitalise.
Rivett got on the end of a grubber to open the visitors’ account. McAlpine’s conversion missed.
Tigers fullback Jackson Brien took his team down the hosts’ end of the park again with his 60m dash down the right wing.
It was a golden chance for Oberon to extend the lead but a knock on denied them the chance.
Pat’s best opportunity to score before half-time was once again created through a Zac Merritt line break.
After he was tackled inches away from the try line Pat’s quickly sent the ball to the left wing but threw it into touch.
A renewed Pat’s hit back just two minutes into the new half through fullback Sam Dwyer. The missed conversion left the scores at 4-all.
The Saints continued to dominate possession and field position up until the 65th minute but the Tigers defence soaked up the barrage.
Tigers were rewarded for their effort off the ball when a converted try to Andy Adams put them 10-4 up on the hour mark.
The response from the hosts was swift.
Adams ran across the face of the Oberon defence to create an overlap on the right side, giving Kirby the space to find the try line.
Josh Howarth’s missed sideline conversion meant the Tigers clung onto a two point lead.
Hungry Pat’s defence forced a line drop out, and at the end of the set a converted Kirby try gave his team the lead for the first time with just six minutes remaining.
Howarth helped wind down the clock with a late penalty goal.
