Seven days after he claimed a Commonwealth Games men’s T54 wheelchair marathon gold medal on the Gold Coast, on Sunday he back up over the same 42.2 kilometre distance in London and managed a top five result.
“I got fifth today and in dire need of a holiday. Time for some family time,” he posted on Twitter.
After a physically and emotionally draining week on the Gold Coast where he represented Australia for the last time, plus a long flight to London, Fearnley was solid in the opening stages on Sunday.
He was part of a five-man breakaway, that group pushing through the 15km mark in just over 30 minutes.
In the end it came down to a sprint finish, with Great Britain’s David Weir having the most left in his arms as he claimed the win in one hour, 31 minutes, 15 seconds. Fearnley crossed the line in 1:31.24.
