With music and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz, Carillon Theatrical Society director Charmeon Jooste said it will be a show for the entire family.

The show is based on the 1995 Gregory Maguire novel Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West, and is an alternate telling of the film The Wizard of Oz (1939) and novel The Wonderful Wizard of Oz (1900).

Ms Jooste said Wicked tells the story of two unlikely friends Elphaba (who is the the Wicked Witch of the West) and Galinda (who was later known as Glinda the Good Witch).

Elphaba is played by Alex Vidler while Galinda is played by Ellen Bolger-Rowe.

“The two main lead roles of Elphaba and Galinda are really quite difficult and they’re really quite demanding of their voices – they go from soprano down to a gravely voice all in one song,” Ms Jooste said.

“Galinda is that iconic beautiful and very gorgeous girl who seems to have it all together while Elphaba feels very shy, very other.

“Their relationships are quite complex.”

The cast of 47 and crew of 20 have been working on the production since late January.

Ms Jooste said the three-hour long show was full of fights, love and laughter and was very family friendly.

“The music is very wonderful and very supportive of all that,” she said.

While Ms Joose has been involved with the Carillon Theatrical Society for a number of years, this is the first time she has directed a production for the group.

“We did our first run through with the full orchestra last week and that was just incredible and there was a real buzz after it,” she said.

Meanwhile, the musical director is Anna Thompson, choreographer is Natalie Fenton, John Vickery is assistant director and Emma Mason is producer.

Wicked has a 10-show season at the Bathurst Memorial Entertainment Centre, commencing on Thursday, May 3.
